The hud in Origins is not intrusive at all. Hud's in previous AC games have been pretty intrusive though - I generally disable the minimap and button prompts in those. The hud in this game is one of it's most underappreciated aspects in my opinion - it makes you look at the world itself rather than having your eyes glued to a map.

If you are running across the map, sure horse could save you more time. Most of the differences we perceive in speed are actually the differences in animations/camera view. It's like how some games, when you hold sprint they put you in "sprint view" where the edges of the screen warp. It seems like you are going faster.
